Ernie Citulsky

1935 - 2011

Born and raised in the Seech Lake, Manitoba area, Ernie grew up amongst a musical family. Influenced by his dad Mike and Great Uncle's musical talent, he began playing the cymbaly and, as time went by the violin caught his interest and became his signature instrument to play. He was self-taught on both instruments and many evenings were spent by him and his brother Peter practicing. In the early 50s, Ernie and Peter were a two men band who played at weddings and anniversaries around the Oakburn, Sandy Lake areas.

Later, Ernie went to play with “The Sunset Valley Boys”, which included playing in Saskatchewan and in their home areas. As years went by, with his brother Peter, formed the “Harmony Ranch Boys”, playing in Rivers, Brandon and Sandy Lake area and even performing on CKX radio in Brandon

In the early 70s, Ernie moved to Yorkton, SK. where he played with various bands. In the early 80s, Ernie with his brothers Peter and Bill, sisters Anne and Alice, niece Michelle and close friend Marshall formed the “Citulsky Family Band”. The band played at many weddings anniversaries, dances and family reunions in the following years. The highlight of Ernie's musical career was recording three albums with the “Citulsky Family Band” playing their favorite tunes for the rest of the world to enjoy.

During his retirement years in Yorkton, he began making violins like the one on display, for his two daughters and all his grandchildren that they enjoy as part of his legacy.

His memory in his contribution to the Ukrainian Folk music remains with us forever.

With deep sadness the family of Ernest Citulsky (husband, father, gido, brother, father-in-law, and friend) announce his passing June 2, 2011 at the age of 76.

He will never be forgotten and will remain in our hearts and spirits.

Rest in peace.
